| no partners | | Did the "Lower Emigrant Loop" near Pinecrest CA, about 20mi north of Yosemite. Landed in smoke filled Sacramento and drove 3hr
to the crab tree trailhead. A fair amount of smoke in air from the Bay Area fires still , heavy haze. This is a 45 mi loop at about 7k-10k elevation
with amazing lakes every 2-4 miles of the trail ( easy on the back !). There are trout in the lakes but fires were not allowed so no option to cook them.
We saw bear prints and several deer. Tue. night the smoke and ash got very heavy and we thought we might have to bail but it cleared up. Wed. we took
an unintentional side trail to from Emigrant Lake to near Kennedy Meadows. Was an interesting change in the geology. Took a swim in most of the lakes.
Unfortunately there is a trail packing outfit that packs people in with mules so they don't have to carry packs, this messes up the trail. Aside from that it's a
great "moderate" hike away from the Yosemite crowds but with the same landscape. Not as good as good old AZ but I hope to hit AZ this fall !! |
