The four runner did well in the mud but I decided to stop at the res. gate and walk. The portion walked wasn't that bad so we should have driven. Because of the long walk to the trailhead we ended up dry camping on the esplanade the first night. Second day to Bass tanks, fill up and move to Serpentine for camp. There was a small trickle of water. Slept on 'the shelf' overlooking the creek. Third day to Ruby was nice and easy, we were elated to see water in Ruby. Had a nice 'beach day' there after arriving. Then Turquoise was the next stop, a nice day again, spent the afternoon under the overhang or getting wet. The night at Turquoise was eventful ! Clouds came in at dinner and woke at night with rain. Followed by large lighting bolts. The best part was waking to snow a hundred feet above camp ! That morning we walked in the cold rain for a while on the way to Slate. Found decent water. Next day was long to Hermit from Slate. It was a bit rushed again partly rainy. It was great to see the Boucher area however briefly and to see the classic Tonto landscape that long day. After a night at Hermit we went to Hermit rapids for
almost two days off. Being on the beach and hiking up hermit creek was amazing. Sitting on a rock and watching the water flow and change is the best. We were there on the eclipse day and spent some time trying to capture a pic of it. I can't remember the method other than a direct sun shot but it worked. The canyon cooled about 8 deg. when the sun died out. Met a university rafting group which explained a uranium mine is or potentially will contaminate the Hermit habitat. Hope it's not true but it didn't sound good. The hike out was fine and finished a great hike. |
