Just got the Keen Targhee III's as a warranty replacement for the Targhee II's... not so good.
While the tread seems to be better design than the II's and they are comfortable, they have the same weak point as before... the gray rubber in between the black segments is SOFT, like marshmallow! Within a mile of the beginning of the hike a thorn penetrated right through the gray rubber, through the insole and into my foot!
](*,)
Definitely not good! And this was in an area where I have hiked at least a dozen of other brand (cheap to expensive) different boots without a thorn penetration. (The only through-the-sole previously was the Targhee II's other pair of Keens a week prior)
Further, although on both pair the black rubber is harder than the gray, they seem to grab and hold onto every possible thorn so after the hike they are practically a sole-of-thorns.
While my other boots will pick up some, most thorns never stick in far enough to stay there, or are easily scraped off with by boot-cleaning brush... a quick swipe back and forth and they're clean.
So in the end, I'll only wear the Keens on well-beaten well-traveled trails.
