Turned out to be a bit less than pleasant due to rock fall onto FR 191 in a number of spots... plenty of loose sharp rocks made for some treacherous footing.
Only a short break at the swingset... it appears someone tried the glider since my temporary fix back in April has come somewhat undone.
We were a bit surprised how much new growth over the old road/trail in less than 5 months so we trimmed the worst of the Manzanita the half-mile down to FR 191.
The original plan after the Swingset hike was to add a short trip down to the Mercuria Mine, which I had visited back in 2013 but Tracey had yet to visit... but after dealing with the rocky sections on FR 191 it felt like we'd hiked 10 miles rather than just over 4 so we agreed to skip it this time.
Age continues to take along on its journey with both of us feeling a bit more wear-and-tear than expected. Part of the issue with me was new boots with HARD soles which wasn't the best thing on loose sharp rocks... I couldn't feel the terrain as well making for even more jolts on my aching hip.
But no, matter, it was a great day for a hike.
Last item: At the swingset we could see a small plume of smoke from the Hidden Fire in the western Sierra Ancha and plenty of smoke which had settled in the valleys from Punkin Center area up toward Payson. Thankfully we didn't smell any smoke or experience raw throats. |
