Thursday - down North Bass to the Redwall narrows. Geared up and did the 7 rappels. We had brought wetsuits - turned out they weren't neeeded. Got a little wet and cold but we didnt' get cold enough to justify the weight. Camped shortly before the start of the Tapeats narrows
Friday - descended the gorgeous Tapeats section. Scrambled up Redwall canyon to the top of the Tapeats. Super fun section. Continued down the Tapeats section of Muav. Tons of springs and running water. Hit Shinumo creek and camped shortly after Bass Camp. Contined down the drainage to the waterfall. Tons of water and was intimidating. Water was only a little over waist deep so we continued. We planned on hiking the river level back to the North bass trail, but it cliffed out and we would've had to swim, so we went back the way we came.
Sat. Dox castle attempt. Hiked pass Bass camp at the river and took a drainage to gain access above the Tapeats. Contoured around to the south and made it to the technical part of the Muav. The Tomasi book rates it as a 5.4 climb, but the consenseus was that it's a 5.7. Pitch one was short but pretty tough. Then onto Pitch 2. Pitch 2 was the absolute scariest pitch of climbing i've done. You had to search around for a hold that wouldn't crumble. I have no idea how our lead climber did it. He did have a crack that took good pro. I'm definitely not a great trad climber I would have bailed after 10 feet. As it was it was the scariest thing I've ever toproped. Every climber sent down a rain of rocks - some big. We finally all made it up pitch 2 and did the traverse over to the low point in the saddle. At this point, even thought it was on flat ground, I was spooked. everything was loose and with the exposure, it was pretty terrifying. 3 out of the four of us decided we were done. Great views from the Ridgeline. Rapped down and made our way back to camp at Shinumo.
Sun - hiked North Bass out and drove back home.
I've figured out my tolerance for loose rock is low. Maybe my subconscious remembers a fateful fall 6 Thanksgivings ago. |
