| no partners | | Camped nbear the grandview fire lookout on Friday night. It was suprisingly warm. In the morning when we left my car said it was 36!
Day 1. Dropped a car at New Hance and drove to Tanner. Made quick work of the Tanner trail down to 75 mile saddle. Once we were there we decided on doing Escalante butte, since we should have plenty of time to make it to the river at papago. Scrambled up Escalante and soon made it to the "spot" a three foot jump to the acutal summit. We all made the jump over. Not too bad since there's a lot of toom to land. The way back is another story - way more intimidating. We all made it over and continued back to the saddle. From there it's a steep loose slope down to 75 mile. in 75 mile we did 2-3 raps, one being about 180ft or so. After the technical section it was pretty easy going. Hit the escalante rt over to Papago.
Day 2. backtracked to 75 mile and headed up past the narrows From there it is a steep slope up to a saddle below pt 3685. While we were there we decided to scramble up the pt to get a view of the rest of the climb. More steep hiking to the ridge and then we countoured over to the East fork of papago - bagging pt 4224 along the way. Dropped into the east fork and checked out the big rap. Then countoured over to the west fork. West fork was a blast. 6-8 raps, several downclimbs and some sweet Shimuno Quartzite narrows. The final rap to the beach is usually bypassed, but we decided to rap it since we had time. Setup a deadman's and made sure it was solid. We rapped down then ascended it for practice. Once we were up we broke down the anchor and scrambled down to camp. While we were doing this we ran into Karl and Kathy and John. small world
