Nearly the first mile was in the semi-dark, needed a headlamp to see even though the sky was a little light. Most of the hike in was in the shade due to the sun low in the sky and the terrain. First person I saw was a biker 6 miles in. Saw a trail runners on my way out. On my way back the wind picked up quite a bit. I didn't mind at all since it kept me cooler. Over 14 miles and didn't even kill a 100oz bladder in my Camelbak.
The trail seemed rockier on the way back in spots than it did on the way in. Fatigue and age played a part in that for sure. A road parallels the trail for a section on the north end, on the way back I saw an ATV meandering down that road very slowly, looking like rolling it was a possibility. The crossing of Arrastre Creek gave some nice views into that valley. Saw an interesting cave while headed southbound.
Finished up in just under 6 hours, making an average speed of just over 2 mph. Started of mid tempo, picked up speed in the middle part, then slowed down towards the end. Nice day with cooler desert weather. |
