First time on the BCT. Bruce setup it up as a through hike with a short easy car shuttle before the hike. We woke up two mountain bikers from Alaska sleeping at the Black Canyon Trailhead as we arrived. Packed up and ready to go within the first 500 feet Bruce rolled his ankle. Said it was the worst ankle roll he’d ever had but he walked it off. Unfortunately, he had to walk it off for 18 plus miles.

First part of the BCT was filled with wide nicely graded switchbacks down to the Agua Fria River crossing. Lots of water in the creek but we managed to find an ok crossing. Up the other side the trail wanders in and out of side drainages. Being really good trail we knocked out the first 9 miles in 3 hours. About mile 10 we decided to take our lunch break on a saddle. We caught up to Alaska on the saddle who had passed us earlier also having lunch. They winter in Arizona and summer in Alaska….sounds like a solid strategy!

After lunch we continued on some more really nice trail. Out of the 18 plus miles the highlight was from about mile 6 to 12. This section was generally further from the highway and featured some lush desert landscapes especially with all the rain over past few months. However, after mile 13 we hiked into a burn area that continued for several miles. The trail also traversed back to the road around Bumble Bee trailhead so we had more traffic within earshot of the trail.

Last few miles were uneventful but we encountered more mountain bikers heading southbound. All told we ran into 4 mountain biker groups, half dozen trail runners and 1 hiker that I recall. Once back at the vehicle we all enjoyed a beverage to cap off the hike :D
