Nick invited me to join him on this hike and it looked interesting from what I read online. I picked him up from Havasu Springs Resort around 0900, and we headed over to the trailhead. The drive from the resort to the trailhead took just under an hour. Road is in good shape, but slow with all the twists and turns.

Headed south up the trail from the signed start. First part up the ridge is not very exciting, but a nice warm up. As the trail approached the first mountain, it got a lot better. Once we cleared the west side of that hill and could then finally see Cupcake, the trail and scenery steadily improved. There's a nice, nearly flat section through some cholla before starting the final ascent to the summit.

The last half mile was steep, but an easy scramble. You can see the chute at the top of the center of the mountain that you need to reach. The chutes we ascended took us slightly to the left of the top chute, and there's a little traverse right across the base of the summit block to get to that chute. Nothing too difficult, with some dramatic scenery. Out of the entire hike, there's a distance of about 30 feet that I would not consider kid-friendly (at least for my kids), but the rest is good.

Once up top, it was very windy, so we sat behind some rocks and had a snack. Enjoyed the views for a while before heading back down. The descent was easy, grippy shoes on grippy rocks made for sure footing most of the way. Very windy on the way down though.

This was a fun hike, despite my general dislike of California, and it looks like there's a lot of other places to explore in the Whipple Mountains Wilderness. I may venture back one day in cool weather. Thank you, Nick, for the invitation, good to see you again!
