| partners | | Started hiking a little after 0930. Cool and cloudy, but no wind. Some flurries on the way up. Snow was coating the hillsides of Peralta Canyon, which was beautiful to see. After a while, the trail was snow covered, but generally good footing.
At Fremont Saddle, we turned left and headed uphill towards the route to Robbers Roost. Thank goodness I decided at the last minute to download the route to RouteScout, because without that, it would have been very difficult to stay on track. The snow was a few inches deep most of the way. Route finding and progress was slow, but quite enjoyable.
A little slick getting down into the Roost, and it took some creativity to avoid the worst spots. Once in the Roost, we took a break while it started snowing again. The clouds were moving past quickly, alternating between snow and sun, but it was cloudy most of the time.
Easier to backtrack to Fremont Saddle since we had the benefit of following our tracks in the snow. From the saddle again, we headed out to the lone pine for some more photo ops. Debated between returning on Peralta or Cave trail, but decided Peralta would be a little easier. Quick hike back down, and there were quite a few hikers on the slushy trail at this point.
Gorgeous day, and such a unique chance to hike this one in the snow. Good to see Nick again. |
