Took a day trip to Sedona on super bowl Sunday. We figured it wouldn’t be too peopley, because sports. That was very inaccurate and we realized quickly that our leisurely timing was going to be a problem. You always know what you’ll be dealing with by the devils bridge parking. The lines of cars on the street was NUTS! As we approached Boynton Canyon (our original plan) we saw people parking on the street as far as a mile away. Huge groups, probably now going to wait in line for the coveted Instagram shot at “the subway.” We both weren’t having all the people and decided the ruins on the far end of boynton were going to be for another day. So, onto the backup plan and over to hartwell we went; it’s probably the only canyon not on Allfails! So.much.better. A few people at the TH, but very peaceful and quiet! We first went off trail after 1/2 mile or so and then went up to check out the Elvis house. Wow, that place was cool! :) It had 3 floors and really gorgeous Sedona views. I swear if they put some work in they could probably have a nice Air BnB! So we followed an old road for a while, intending to head back to the main trail. I saw a social looking trail over on the left & decided we were going to see what was there. WOW! Good choice! There were some amazing petroglyphs over there; super unique and detailed! :rollH: They even had fingerprints and hands. This was a lovely scenic lunch spot and we took a long break admiring the canyon walls. We saw a different social trail and thought it might lead to dwellings, so we left our packs at the bottom and went for a climb. It turned out getting reeeeeallly sketchy and bushwhacky so we ended up not continuing that way and heading back. We knew they’d be dwellings nearby, so we checked out the next side canyon. We saw a cute little alcove up there, and finally on our way down we saw some dwellings. They seemed more like a lookout, so we headed back to the trailhead & decided to come back after researching more. It was a beautiful day in Sedona and we had a canyon all to ourselves while massive hoards of people were at these other popular destinations fighting for photo ops; that’s a win in my book!
