It was extremely steep with tons of loose rock, and nothing to grab onto except cacti or catclaw. There was some bloodshed and whining on this descent. Alas, we made it back down into the canyon. Gosh, it’s just so pretty in there! We backtracked maybe 1/4 mile to see if there were any footprints in the sand indicating that the other group had made it through the swimmer. There were not, so I assumed they must have turned around as well. We explored down the canyon a ways and were just in awe of all the awesome geology. We hadn’t set up a shuttle or anything so we looped back following one of the routes we found on here. Per usual, this “route” exiting the canyon was brutal and I wonder why people wanted to go that way I didn’t know the person, so I couldn’t even curse them, ha! So much catclaw, tall grass with tons of foxtails and cacti bombs everywhere. We just tried to find the least stabby places and pushed forward. Next came the exit.... not the WORST canyon exit I’ve done, but Kara and I both have knees recovering right now so that escalated it a bit. Very steep, bushwhacky and loose rocks all the way up to the top. Once we reached the Ridgeline, we took a break and evaluated our return route choices. The route we were following looked to be a bit longer, so we opted to drop back down for a more direct route back to the start instead. This route down wasn’t too awful and finally we were back on the main trail. We got to see a fog covered four peaks during our exit and it was very pretty! Really loved this canyon so much, despite the awful entry and exit points. We were starving post hike and headed over to chili’s to inhale chips n salsa and margaritas! Yum! |
