| partners | | Decided on a whim to check out Parker Canyon. We parked right before the huge ruts in the road (would need tons of clearance and great tires to continue on the road). Then we dropped into the canyon through a drainage - there were a couple of mild downclimbs but nothing too bad. We entered the canyon near the {man made} waterfall/dam & then continued all the way downstream until we could go no further due to mandatory rappels. The canyon was stunning!!! The sounds of flowing water always soothes me, as does the sound of no people! Absolutely beautiful in there and after taking a long break at the {natural} waterfall cave, we headed back the way we came. Since the hike in the canyon was pretty short, we decided to walk further up the road to be able to see the rest of the canyon from a higher vantage point. This was when we first encountered a small group that was also viewing the canyon from above. We walked to the far end and then out on a ledge and got an amazing view into the rest of the canyon. There were giant spires and just super cool geology. We actually looked at a couple of different possibilities for routes down, but ultimately decided it needed better research since it looked pretty sketchy! The skies were turning dark fast so we made a beeline back to the car. We were able to beat the rain as we continued down the road and even got a chance to stop and play in the SNOW & check out some abandoned cabins on the way out. (Not on my recording) Potential for sunset looked good, so we stopped at an overlook with a view of Roosevelt lake to watch. I was bundled up in a sleeping bag since it was getting chilly. The sunset was a bust, so we headed home. Absolutely loved this canyon & cannot wait to get back in there. Would be open to rappelling the entire canyon once it’s warmer and/or finding an alternative (non technical) entry to the other end of the canyon! We will definitely be back here and to other canyons we found nearby; the Anchas keep pleasantly surprising me! |
