| no partners | | Still in Wi - I took a hike on the lake. (Good thing it's frozen, with lots of snow on it) .
A couple weeks ago, we had a few "10 below zero" days, with a chill factor of -25 F.
Then it warmed up a bit, and snowed about 20 to 25 inches in a 3 day period, on top of the already 8 inches of snow that was on the ground.
Suffice to say, the lake is safe to walk on. Snowmobiles, ATVs and ice fishermen (& ice fisherwomen), are taking advantage of the rather warm (45 F) temps and solid, thick ice.
Going down the hill from my house had me making "post holes" to mid thigh, due to drifting.
However, the lake now had snow only 4 or 5 inches deep, so the hiking wasn't too bad.
The relatively warm, dry temps are causing the snow to sublimate (go from a solid directly to a gas - skipping the step of a liquid). Therefore, no big water ponds atop of the ice right now.
Lotsa tracks on the lake from all those snowmobiles and ATVs, so if one hiked in their tracks, you had solid, packed snow to hike on.
Good footing & no post holes.
My track on Google Earth had me "walking on water", since GE's photo was taken during a thaw.
It's always a bit surreal for me, to be 'hiking around' the lake, as I'm much more used to 'boating around' the lake. |
