|I do this hike every few years, either CW or CCW.|
The Dutchman Tr is in fine shape, as is Bluff Spring Tr.
Many years ago, I located Circle Benchmark (& its two Ref Marks), atop Coffee Flat Mtn.
On that hike, I failed to locate Circle Azimuth Mark. All 4 disks were set in 1946.
The Circle datasheet said Circle Azimuth Mark was "Right next to the trail, in Barkley Basin".
After thinking the surveyors were wrong (they weren't), and after some research, I discovered that the Dutchman Trail was 're-aligned', probably in the 1960s. Also (my speculation), back in the 1940s, the "trail" was called Miners Tr & not Dutchman Tr.
All the above trivia made sense, and then the datasheet made sense, so years ago, I went off-trail, bushwhacked up my GPS generated Circle azimuth line, and finally located the Circle Azimuth disk.
The pre-alignment section is much closer to Miners Needle, and did not include those present switchbacks, traversing the side of Coffee Flat Mtn, on the present Dutchman Tr.
Since that Circle Azimuth disk was the very first azimuth disk I ever located, I check it out & say "Hello", every time I hike up the Dutchman.
I was devastated by the fire damage on this loop - So sad.
It makes the once wonderful views in Barkley Basin etc look like a bad 'moonscape'.
I also stopped and visited my favorite 'boulder' on Bluff Spg Tr.
I gave the "Peralta Brothers" their due. -
