| no partners | | 'Lone Mountain' - There are many in Arizona. This one is in La Paz County, N of Eagletail Mountains, and just N of I-10. Lone Mountain Range is in the Harquahala Plain, and compared to most mountain ranges in the area, it is tiny. It's not a destination for anyone I know, due to its tiny size, no trails, and its arduous accessibility.
Six miles of sandy, soft road equals a high clearance, 4WD vehicle. Where the road is real bad, you leave it and drive parallel in the open desert.
So, what's the allurement for me? Two separate benchmarks and their reference marks.
One set of disks is on the farthest SE bump, and the other set is atop the highest NW peak.
One negative note - I'm thinking of calling the geological service and petitioning them to change the name from "Lone Mountain" to a more appropriate name - "Scree Mountain".
95% of this little range is scree, scree, scree. Anything over a 10% pitch had me sliding along.
Suffice it to say, I survived.
I located all six disks, and a Height of Light. Although the Height of Light was down, it was built better than most. The 1948 surveyors must have also been carpenters. I gave it its due, and set it up again.
If you know where to look, you can see it from I-10. (with binocs or a zoom camera).
I won't recommend this range to anyone, as the 'reasons to go there' are narrow. Only a small, atypical set of hikers would make the time. -
