| no partners | | I hiked up a mountain in the Gila Bend Mtns, near Red Rock Canyon.
The mountain is west of Rte 85, and just west of the dry, very wide, and flat Gila River.
A "NOSE" lives up top the mountain.
NOSE ….. as in NOSE Benchmark.
Getting up to Nose BM consisted of hiking to the base of the mountain, going up a valley full of boulders, then up a drainage that also had a zillion boulders. From there, I went left and used a jagged, narrow and pointy ridgeline for awhile, before getting off of it to hike adjacent to it. Once near the Nose, I rejoined the last portion of the "joke" of a ridgeline, to get to the top.
All this work, just so I could say "Hello, Nose".
Great and interesting views up on Nose.
Woolsey Pk is 11 miles NW, and you get a full view of its 'backside' - The side few climb.
Margies Pk is 9 miles NE.
You can see how expansive the Gila river is in this area also. The wide, dry river bed is now home to alot of farm land.
On the way back down from Nose, I viewed a bird on a high peak, searching for a meal. I'm hoping a HAZ member can name the predator species.
I have no idea why the surveyors (or their superiors) named this benchmark, NOSE. To me the mountain doesn't look like a "proboscis". |
