Friday was a work holiday so I visited Estes Park which is a little over an hour from Broomfield. I settled on one of the park's lower elevation hikes, but brought micro spikes which came in handy for some icy spots near the end. It was the first time I've used micro spikes and they worked wonderfully--light, quick and easy to put on, and the traction was excellent in what would otherwise have been quite slippery. The views from this hike were excellent and there are tons of rocks to explore and find even better viewpoints. Gem Lake is a small pond, currently partially frozen, with cliffs on two sides. This is an excellent "easy" hike which makes it popular, but the bouldering off-trail allowed me to find a secluded spot for my lunch with a view. Every hike around here seems to have climbing opportunities, so I'm beginning to understand why so many people in this area are into climbing. Maybe I will overcome my fear of getting trapped on a rock with no easy way back down...
