El Yunque trail is open, but the last steep section that climbs to El Yunque Peak is closed. The connection from Bano de Oro to El Yunque trail (in the official route) is currently closed, so this trail now begins at the parking lot prior to Bano de Oro. Although El Yunque Peak is closed, you can still go to Los Picachos viewpoint which is nearby, but not quite as high as El Yunque Peak. Los Picachos offers excellent 360 degree views across the rainforest.
The day I visited we were lucky enough to not encounter any rain. It was partly cloudy with a beautiful sky. We heard the native coqui tree frog, but did not see any. The hike was slightly muddy, but not bad at all. It wasn't too crowded, but we did pass by a number of other hikers on the trail. After a memorable hike we had a smoothie and empanadas at the rainforest cafe in the next parking lot over. |
