| no partners | | This is a peak at the east end of a ridge near Lake Shastina. On the 1954 Lake Shastina quadrangle, a vertical benchmark is indicated on this peak, but it is not listed in the National Geodetic Survey database. The ridge is private property, but a picnic area and boat ramp owned by the irrigation district that owns Lake Shastina is just below the peak. There is no fence or signs, so I said “what the heck, I’ll check the peak out.”
It took me about 30 minutes to get to the top. I looked for the benchmark, scraping soil aside, unpiling rocks, but could not find it. It’s probably gone. Three rock walls coming up the north, southeast, and southeast approaches are evident. I would guess they were probably built by the first ranchers in the area in the 1850’s or 1860’s. The views of Mount Shasta, the Trinity Mountains, the Cascade Ridge, and Mount McLoughlin are fantastic. |
