Starting at the Peralta Trailhead I took the Dutchman Trail up the first hill and then at the base there was another trail to the South that looked like an old cattle trail. Following this trail you have to go through another gate onto State Land Trust land. From the gate the trail continues South and pretty much downhill and later merges into a dirt road that leads to the Quarter Circle U Ranch. I continued South until I got to another ridgeline and up I think Barks Canyon. When I started, about 8am, it was in the low 80s and when I finished, about 12 noon, it was in the middle 90s. There was a fire there a couple of years ago which is still apparent. There was a lot of burnt brush and a number of cow carcasses that vultures were still picking at. It was a fairly easy 6 mile in and out hike, but there was some bushwhacking and scree-sliding because the trail is not well marked and I got off trail a number of times. |
