Route Scout GPS Route Recorded on Route Scout View
Denny and I started from Warpaint around 7:30 and headed over towards Corona. Our plan was to go up the wash to the east of Corona and top out near Eagle Pass. About 1.25 miles in, we took a short use trail toward the wash. It ended up turning back towards the east, so we left that path and dropped down into the wash and started heading up. Next time, to eliminate some backtracking, I'd drop into the wash about 3/4 mile into the hike, or take Secret Trail and drop in there.

We weren't sure of what to expect, but the wash was great! It was remarkably free of brush, and scrambling over the boulders was as easy or as difficult as you'd want to make it; there was always an easy way up. I wore pants instead of shorts, but shorts would have been perfectly fine. It was nice to see some new scenery, and I kept trying to look for a mine I know is back in there, although I never saw it. There was a lot of javelina evidence, which made sense, because there was still some water from the last time it had rained. I kept thinking to myself that my kids would love this hike, and there was only one spot about 2 miles in where I thought I would be nervous to have them climb over. I'm sure if I looked around though, I could find an alternate route over those rocks.

We eventually reached where Corona crosses the wash, then continued in the wash through the same part we did a couple of weeks ago. We spotted two coyotes, and managed to get a couple of bad pictures of them. Once we were almost to the TV Road, we turned left and headed up to the ridge. We skipped Gila Lookout since we were there recently, and headed east on the ridge instead. It was easy to stay on the ridge, with some faint paths in places, and nothing terribly steep. Nice views over the eastern half of the park. At the Chinese Wall, we looked around for a minute, then headed down through the first crack in the wall that we found. It was steep going through the rocks, and there were a bunch of bees in the rock right at eye level. I think they were after some water in the rock, but I didn't stick around long enough to confirm. Denny managed to offend the bees, and one didn't take kindly to that. I kept going while he was dealing with his new friend--they came to one-sided terms after some noisy discussion. This area was the only brushy spot of the entire hike--maybe a couple hundred feet of avoiding palo verdes. When we looked back, we saw another crack in the wall, a little further down, that would probably been a better spot to come through, and it would have avoided that short section of brush.

After that, we followed the ridge to where it meets Corona, and then took Corona back down and to the trailhead. Only saw a handful of people all day, but there were a lot of cars parked on Warpaint. This may be my new favorite off-trail loop on South Mountain now. It's probably not a dog-friendly loop, some areas in the wash would likely require assistance, and the ridge had a lot of cactus for a dog to deal with. Great day with the cloud cover, and the temps were almost perfect.
