Our hike of Trail 307 was another grand outing and experience.

We began our travels at 0545 hours on Sunday, September 21, 2008 with a two-hour drive from home to the trail head. Arizona always looks so different in the early morning; and the beauty of the mountains and deserts is more vivid in color and shapes.

After arriving at the trail head and saddling up for our hike, we took a few pictures at the trail head. My wife saw two skunks in the area, but I missed that "opportunity." We actually started our hike at 0753 hours.

We hiked the north trail to Spruce Mountain first; and this route is the shortest distance to Spruce Mountain lookout. As we hiked the trail, we took some pictures of the surrounding mountains and the flora. We hope that we would see a deer or two, but that was not to be.

We arrive at the lookout area at 1005 hours. At the lookout area, we stopped to have our usual trail meal (soy nuts, banana chips, beef jerky and water). While there we talked with another couple who had began their hike on the south trail route and was returning via the north trail route. Another hiking couple, who started their hike on the north trail route joined us the lookout and took a break. A group of ATV rider (three ATV in total) also joined us at the lookout.

We left the lookout area around 1033 and began our hike of the south trail back to the trail head. This segment of the hike was longer in distance than the north trail, but the elevation change was more gradual. Also, the south trail seem to be more interesting hiking and viewing than the north trail.

During our hike of the south trail, we met two other couples going in the same direction (they were speed hiking; we don't speed hike). Also, we encountered mountain biker, a mule rider, and two couple (traveling separately) out riding their horses.

We arrived back at the trail head at 1315 hours. According to the trail sing, our loop hike was nine miles in distance. After resting a few minutes and changing clothes, we went to an early dinner of salad, bread and meat; all washed down with iced tea.

The spiritual highs that we get from these hikes cannot be overstated. We are already looking forward to our next hike; possibly in the red rock area of Sedona, Arizona.

Keep on trekking.
