I was in Massachusetts staying in Wakefield (just north of Boston) visiting family & was determined to find an actual “hike” in close proximity. I found the Middlesex Fells reservation trail system and within the system there was a possibility for what looked like could be a decent hike.

I actually convinced two of my college friends to come with me, woohoo! From what I’d read, there was a decent amount of elevation gain (for MA anyway), a couple of bodies of water, a pretty foresty setting with cute bridges, a water tower with views and even a waterfall. It was supposed to be 6.5 miles and the weather was gorgeous so we started mid morning.

We arrived to a full parking lot and a pretty packed area; alas I told the girls not to worry because I doubted many were heading the on the same longer loop I’d chosen. We mostly followed what was labeled the bike loop & reservation trail on the map, but took a few offshoots that would provide some additional scenery.

The loop was partially paved, but mostly a dirt rocky path with lots of tree roots to avoid. There were some decent inclines in parts of the loop too. We went to the tower, but it was locked so didn’t get to see the views. The lake & reservoir views were serene and we took a break about halfway through. The waterfall was more like a creek cascade but still pretty! I was caught up in conversation at one point and we missed a turn so I navigated us back but added on an extra mile, oops lol. I wasn’t mad..

The loop ended up being 8 miles from one GPS and 7.3 miles according my garmin (which is always low) so I’m going to average it around 7.5. It was a chill pace with lots of catching up and very nice to be walking outside midday without overheating. No one died and we earned some post hike treats so I’d say it was a win given the limited options nearby.
