Another episode of Jill wanders into the woods solo to get away from the madness of life and get her personality back… This time I did actually download one trail option. Didn’t read the description or any triplogs or anything else to prepare, lol.

Drove up Saturday afternoon and drove around my desired area for a while before electing to go with the same campsite from a couple of weeks prior. Just after I got set up the mosquitoes came out in full force before the sky erupted in thunder and lightning. I was inside Tessa at like 7pm and I actually slept well!

I couldn’t actually figure out the directions from camp to my trailhead so I gave it my best guess and found myself at a sign saying fred haught. I parked Tessa there and set out on my way and actually went 1/4 mile the wrong way before realizing that and correcting my mistake. Across the street from the parking area… oops!

I set out on the correct path and it was a foresty trail under the tree lines. They have a weird makeshift trail that goes around the huge area where the road crumbled. It went up and down a lot and was not particularly scenic for a while. I had myself continue on and as I’m walking along this side trail I see all the drainages we’re typically dropping down. I was tempted to explore some but didn’t see anything too exciting. Alas I continued and I passed the first spring on the map. I didn’t see any water there at all so unless I’m blind, it’s dry. Then you finally drop down into a cool meadowy area and have nice {wide} canyon walls. There was a glorious flat stretch for a while.

It’s nice, it’s quiet, nobody in sight and kinda felt like I was in the middle of nowhere! I look at the map and see I don’t have too much further to go to get to the next spring. I decide I’ll make that my turnaround point so I didn’t go over 10 miles. It drops down quite a bit & then you are treated with this gorgeous canyon area. There were a sign that said Fred Haught cabin going to the left and I decided to head to the right. It was so stunning!!!! There was an area where the two canyons met that was just so beautiful. An epic campsite sits right atop this area as well.

The official route continued down the main canyon. The other canyon on the right is what really caught my eye. A look on the map said it was the fred haught canyon and there was no route available for navigating it. I continued on down the canyon and was just continuously wowed. It had the typical Mogollon rim canyon vibe but didn’t look nearby as bushwhacky as the others. The water was flowing and crystal clear surrounded my flowers growing along the steam. It was serenity there; however, I was faced with a predicament. The sky was dark in several areas and I felt a chill in the air. The canyon was narrowing and I had no clue what it would be like around the corner if the water were deeper. I was also already 4.5 miles in and I was solo; there also was no possible options to loop back if I continued on. So unfortunately I couldn’t continue in that canyon today, but I’ll be back.

I’d like to research ways to drop into that canyon more directly and then explore the whole thing! Would probably not want to do it solo so maybe it could be a group thing! Another great solo weekend in the woods!
