Returned to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness for my 3rd time during August 9-14. I just love this adventure!
The voyagers were Gabe (my grandson) for 2nd time, Oliver (my besty) for 2nd time, and first-timers Gabbi (Oliver's daughter), David & Lourdes, their daughter Liann, and Will (Liann's boyfriend). We were in 4 canoes, with 6 tents, and too much food and gear. Gabe starred as the top fisher (again) and provided excellent map and compass guidance for the group. Canoe Country Outfitters in Ely MN provided the route advice, permit, canoes, paddles, and some cooking gear. They are PRO! A "No Fires" restriction was in place in Superior NF so no campfires. All cooking was with propane. There was a fire (we could see the smoke, but rarely smell it) in Ontario. I think Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario was closed. Today, August 23, Superior NF was closed to voyagers because of fire. Glad we missed the evacuation. The weather was mostly very nice with only a little rain. The lakes were low. However, the 4th day presented very high headwinds and 2' waves (peak to trough) when we were crossing a large lake. One canoe got broadside and overturned. After the rescue, we camped overnight on the Canadian side rather than risk hypothermia and another capsizing. This trip was Entry 24, Newton Lake with a portage, another portage and Pipestone Bay, to 1st campsite, near Lewis Narrowa. Next day on to Basswood Lake and a campsite near Upper Basswood Falls where we stayed 2 nights. We then paddled NE, North and South on the huge Basswood Lake along the US-Canada border. Going South we encountered the high headwinds that caused the canoe upset and unplanned overnight in Canada. paddled far (to find an open campsite) did a portage to finally leave Basswood. the last day we started with a portage and then retraced our rout via Pipestone Bay and Newton with 2 more portages and we were out in the morning of the sixth day as planned. I want Togo again! See pictures.
