| partners | | On several hikes to Deadman Creek Falls, I've pointed to 6243 as a someday destination. Someday surfaced. We started an hour later than normal but out-of-prime to most netted 1 vehicle and 1 side-by-side at the trailhead. A mile or so up a man and his dog approached then Bruce mentioned he said or waved goodbye at the falls.
The washed-out spot on Barnhardt remains. Of little concern for most, just slows you down for a minute. The anticipated views off 6243 and the simplicity of the hike was the lure. In a brief look at satellite, it appeared we'd dodge some joyous manzanita on a straight-up approach. Looked thicker as it came into sight.
We picked a line up and had at it. Started as a cool oak forest. Transitioned quick to manzanita. Bruce pushed through thick manzanita for a little stretch. There is a deck midway. Steep and obstacles to the top with scattered manzanita and various vegetation/deadfall.
Views from the top are cool but don't merit a return through the brush. We enjoyed a longer-than-average lunch break. The descent was easier until the dry creek near the trail. We took the creek to Chilson Camp and 0.15 up on Brody Seep, back to the Divide.
At the Divide/Barnhardt junction was a thin log. Looked to be suggesting stay-on the Divide Trail but we never saw any hikers on-trail or from above. Also, a water bottle that Bruce fetched and a cig-butt descending.
Hints of autumn color linger. Temps were perfect all day, just warm on one stretch and the grunt sweat through manzanita earlier. Chest-high grass in areas along the Divide. Recent trail work near the Chilson Spring turnoff. We did not check the spring. |
