The lower parts of the trail are grassy and a bit overgrown but not bad.
Walnut spring was a pleasant surprise. It’s a really beautiful spot and full of clear water even after weeks since the last of the monsoons. The trail around there is super steep with lots of switchbacks. There and in the segments of heavy leaf cover I was really wishing for my new trail runners; the ones I had were worn smooth so I was slip-slidin’ away in places.
After Agua Caliente saddle I came across the aftermath of Bear Berrybush Bingefest, which was basically a series of dinner-plate sized bear scat every few hundred yards for a good mile, each still steaming fresh. No bear sightings though.
Some really amazing, big, gnarly trees on this trail.
Fantastic trail. Road to it rough but definitely SUV passable. My 1st-gen CRV had no trouble. |

Autumn Foliage Observation Moderate Fall colors were throughout, though most of the deciduous trees above Agua Caliente saddle had already lost all their leaves. |

Wildflowers Observation Isolated A few paintbrushes. |
