Coming from Show low you pass through the Indian land and about a mile east off the sunrise turn off the trail is marked by a parking lot and restrooms. The trail follows an old railroad bed through a plush meadow bordered by a sloping mountain forest with tall grass as far as the eye can see. The trail eventually ends at at sheep's crossing.
I followed the rail bed for about three miles and then turned into the forest for the return leg. What a contrast of panorama. I could hear elk bugling and there were signs of a lot of animal activity, especially in the forest. I finally got a look at at several about dusk and then a dramatic sunset.
I saw several skeletal remains suggested the reality of four legged carnivores. A sign at the trail head notes the presence of Mexican gray wolves, reintroduced several years ago have now migrated from their initial reintroduction area of the blue river wilderness area. Tracks of a variety of animals were prevalent. The day was windy. A great hike cut short by a setting sun. |
