After doing the "loop" to warm up I did the nature trail and found a trail that headed N.E. 100 yards past the desert ecosystem descriptive marker. The trail appears to be a horse trail but there were a couple of boot prints so off I headed. The trail meanders through the the desert following the plateau for about a mile before turning south back towards Sutherland wash. From the mesa I could make out the Sutherland trail below and to the south and suspect this trail connects to it . There are a lot of horse trails off the main trails through the park. The one I was following had a lot of growth on it and it dipped into and up and through and feeder washes before joining the Canyon loop trail about a half a mile from the Sutherland trail head junction. The horse trail emerges at a marker that states "this is not a trail". This marker ostensibly directs hikers heading back to the trail head to stay on the main trail to the left. The feeder washes were really pretty with some of the tree showing fall. A beautiful day. |
