| no partners | | Broke out of my wintertime isolation and spent my first night away from home since last September 16th!  
Road trip time is here again, so thought I would start with a visit to the Southern California desert area that I like so much.  On my way to camp at Vallecito Stage Station County Park along the S-2 in Anza-Borrego, I decided to take a short side trip further up I-8 to take a look around Jacumba and stop to say hello to Ben up at Desert View Tower. I hadn't been up there in about 8 years.
Back in the early 1970's when I was stationed at North Island/San Clemente Island in the Navy, I would make fairly frequent trips back and forth to home in Phoenix during my off duty time. If I was in a hurry I just booked it on I-8, but eastbound out of San Diego, I especially liked the slower scenic drive along CA-94 and old US-80 before picking up I-8 again by Jacumba! By the way, the name of the town was officially changed to Jacumba Hot Springs in 2013.
In the 1970's there was still life in the town, even though it was bypassed by the fairly new interstate highway. But the economic decline was underway. The massive Hotel Vaughn (later Jacumba Hotel) was still in operation when I drove through there back in those days. I really regret not stopping there to check it out before its demise.
The Jacumba Hot Springs Motel and Spa is still in operation in the town, and is now undergoing another renovation by new owners. I have wanted to stay there for about a decade, but the shaky online reviews have kept me from doing so. Perhaps this newest upgrade might make me take a chance and stay there in the future. And no, this is not the nearby clothing optional place (De Anza). 
Stopping up there brought back some good memories...just what I needed!
