| no partners | | After spending time up at Barfoot Park, it was over to Rustler to pick a spot to camp. The earlier rains had stopped and it was pleasant when I arrived. Paid my camping fee and hauled some of my gear up to the covered table nearby, where I enjoyed a cup of coffee before wandering around the area for some photos. There still was thunder off to the south, but nothing close. I hoped that would stay the case as evening approached, but up in the mountains all bets are off! After awhile it became apparent storms were moving in after all. It was mellow at first, but then it cut loose with small hail as well. Gusty winds blew the rain under the ramada and stuff was getting tossed around and wet by the table, so I was no longer being entertained.
Before the storm hit a red car with Arkansas plates arrived. Two fellows went off for a hike along the Crest Trail, but later they returned during the heavy downpour and promptly left. I'm sure they had fun on their short time on the trail.
When the lightning got close, I decided to get down to the truck for safety. While sitting in the truck, I made a decision to bail on camping up there and head down the mountain to find another place. A large part of the decision was based on how muddy it was getting where the truck was parked. So, when the lightning had moved on I reloaded the gear and departed. Oh well, it was time to trade one muddy mess for another muddy mess!
