Just to get away from the house, I drove down to the Huachuca Mountains with the intent of looking around in Ash Canyon a bit, before doing a little hiking/photography in Miller Canyon. When I left Tucson, there was no mention in any of the weather discussions about what I was about to encounter there early in the day. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms were expected, but nothing during the morning. By the time I turned south on highway 90, I knew something unexpected was going on. Showers were visible over toward the Dragoon Mountains and I couldn't see the Huachuca Mountains ahead of me. When I got to Sierra Vista I checked the radar app on my phone and saw there was an area of showers concentrated in the area, with a circular motion on the loop (so I knew there was a devilish little atmospheric spinner at play). :stp: I drove into Ash Canyon (South Fork) in a steady light rain (no thunder), and decided to do a little hiking anyway and didn't get too wet. :)

After hiking in there for awhile, I drove back to the road fork and then into Lutz Canyon. Still raining lightly. Stopped by the Bill King place for some photos. He lived there from 1943 until sometime in the 1980s, and was known to be none too friendly. :scared: By the time I finally got to visit this area he was gone. Talking with some folks at Bonnie's Lounge (at the turnoff to Carr Canyon) a number of years ago, I was told that the sheriff checked on him one day and found him eating from a can of dog food, so he knew it was time for old Bill to go!

The rain had now nearly stopped so I drove back down South Fork again for some photos that I skipped earlier when it was raining more heavily. The unexpected weather made me call off going into Miller Canyon, and I decided to to head back home to beat any storms that might be headed for Tucson. I took the scenic way back through Sonoita, Box Canyon, and out to I-19 at Green Valley. Big storms were brewing all around, so I was glad I made that call. :D

Ah yes, the curse of Ash Canyon had struck again. :o : wink :
