The original plan was to summit Mt Belknap in the Tushar Mtns sans children, but Wyatt decided at the last minute he wanted to go too. Had I known he was going to join, we would have started at least an hour earlier, so I figured the summit probably wasn’t going to happen, but we decided to try anyway.

The drive in is almost as good as the hiking, with amazing views the entire way, plus FS 123 is the highest road in Utah, reaching 11,484’, so that was fun too. Very steep and rough in places, but medium clearance would have no problem when dry.

The hike headed uphill immediately, no warm up on this one. From the parking area, we headed west on a steep, faint two track, then turned right and followed the old mining road uphill. I’m not sure if rocks sliding over time covered the old road, or if it was deliberately covered, but all that remains of the road is narrow and all scree.

Made a sharp left at the old mine and headed up to the first saddle, again on a very narrow slanted trail/road. We had scree on 100% of this hike.

At the saddle, we turned right and headed up and across the western face of an unnamed peak just to the southeast of Belknap. Again, very narrow. Pretty soon, Belknap and the second saddle came into view and Wyatt started to regret his choice to hike today. The route up the southeast ridge of Belknap above the saddle was very visible, and obviously very steep, all scree.

We kept traversing the side of the subpeak making our way towards the second saddle, when finally Wyatt declared “yeah, no.” We weren’t surprised, and turned around, figuring we could go hike nearby Delano instead since that hike is pretty easy. As we were traversing back towards the first saddle, we opted to go up to the summit of the subpeak just to look around a bit. It turned out to be a good decision as we wound our way around the south and east side, then up the ridge. Great views all around.

Clouds were gathering as we carefully made our way back downhill, and the wind was picking up, so we decided to skip Delano. I know I won’t have time to make it back out to the Tushars this year, but may try to spend 3-4 days there next summer/fall without kids to do some of the bigger hikes in the area.
