| partners | | Ginny and I had to head up to Sanders Arizona on the res to pick up some yarn for my rug weaving and figured I would spend some time in Flagstaff and Payson hiking. After a big month of hiking in June and a slow month in July I was hoping to make August a good hiking month. Arrived in Flag around two in the afternoon and decided to hike the Sandy's Canyon Trail to the Arizona Trail and head down Walnut Canyon at the cave under Fisher point.
This is a scenic trail down Walnut Canyon. We went down canyon 1.3 miles before we had to turn around and head back. Not sure how far down the canyon the trail goes but 2 to 3 miles further is Walnut Canyon National Monument boundary and I was told you can't enter. The portion of the canyon we did see is amazing. There was a natural cave on the south side of the canyon about a quarter mile in and goes in about 100 feet. Formed along a vertical fault in the sandstone. Thanks to the monsoon rains the vegetation was thick and green (the trail was clear of overgrowth though). There was no water in the creek which was interesting for monsoon season but then many of the creeks around flagstaff run just after a rain but dry up very soon after, the water sinks in the ground quickly. Some day I would like to head down the canyon to the park boundary and maybe head up the north side of the canyon to the Equestrian portion of the Arizona Trail back to Fisher point. Not sure what the climb out would be like but it looks doable. |
