9 a.m. - Started hiking down trail past Ed Abbey's lookout tower.
9:07 - Rounded the summit to beautiful views of Four Peaks. A bit further down, the trail needed more clearing than anticipated.
10:50 - Chopped through a raspberry thicket which was as bad, if not worse, than anything we encountered down below.
11:30 - Having dropped a work glove near the summit, I decided to take a break and go look for it. On the way back up, I did more tweaking of brush over growing the trail.
1:27 p.m. - Unable to find the lost glove up top, I started hiking back down from the tower, after having a nice chat with another HAZer. Great view of Four Peaks again on the west side of the summit. [ youtube video ]
1:33 - On the way down, I ran into Jim hiking back up. He decided to call it a day, and so we agreed that I would thru-hike down to the trailhead below where he would pick me up.
1:53 - I got to the raspberry thicket and hiked down to where I left off earlier. [ youtube video ] Turns out I only had to wade through about 300 feet of raspberry thicket before breaking clear to where I worked to last week. I thought about finishing this off right then and there, but I didn't want to keep Jim waiting below, so I proceeded down the cleared trail.
Back at Petersons Meadow I didn't hear or see any cows, and also didn't see any fresh cowpies or hoof prints. Maybe they're gone? Fingers crossed!
I think we'll make one more trip up there Monday to tweak the trail a bit more and clear that last thicket before declaring victory and checking out The Moody Point Trail! |
