| no partners | | It has been stormy near the border; but of course not lately in my neighborhood so when I meandered down I didn't think anything regarding the water factor. The result was a great hike with pools and a large canyon full on running with the most water I have seen in it.
I wanted to get the last bit of connector canyon to a main canyon. I could use the "wicked" canyon or its sister canyon to get to the connector and get to the main. Topo showed one contour line for a drop and then things tightened up.
The first clue was the road was really chewed up by run off. I was in the Toyota as I saw no need for the Jeep and it handled it just fine with some careful tire placement. I parked in the hidden spot, up and over to avoid the ranch outpost then down wicked. A nice spot in the early slickrock was trashed by some illegals since I had been thru. I had changed out day packs and did not have a trash bag in my pack, had my gloves. Have remedied that. Down thru the rough section then out into the connector/side canyon. Here I saw evidence of recent flash flooding, lots of greenery mowed down and quite a bit of mud and silt. Some of the photos I took had the sinking feeling in the quicksand.
Initially not impressed, finally made a turn in a big rock fall area and the awesome sauce began. Tall walls, greenery, rockbound pools. Started wading as was unavoidable. So beautiful in this section. I encountered no real drop off so I think the main dark lines on TOPO probably 20 feet, than 40. Soon I came to the main canyon, with lots of water. I've seen it with pools and a light flow but not like this. It too had flashed with vegetation down as far as 20-30 feet out of the streambed. I went a little up and down canyon, then turned around. I took the sister canyon back as it is easier but longer. It too had wonderful smooth silt beds and some debris rearrangement due to forceful runoff.
Great place and unintentional good timing. |
