| no partners | | To the Border. Wall gaps meant I could complete something I had been meaning to do. Greening up down there. Drive in along the new burn, but the area was mostly manzanita and Yucca so I think will spring back quickly although some of the scrub oak is done.
No running water so I did not miss out on water hikes down here. Got the mission done of international hiking, then some unintended closure driving, conversing with some cartel guys, conversing with the rancher then conversing with some border patrol guys. Most talking I have done on any recent hike in memory!
"Frank"; cartel guy one seemed like a newbie to the game, he spoke very good english and was disappointed all that was in the area was water. No 7-11 or Circle K to greet him. He asked me if I had a phone and I laughed and asked him where his cartel phone was. Told him unless you have a Sat phone no signal unless you get high on a hill down here. ( I realized I did not have my sat phone in the jeep, getting sloppy) Several other guys were on a nearby hill. They waved and I waved, and as I hiked up the hill to my Jeep called "Hey, come back" I gave them the one finger salute and drove on.
The rancher gave me a heads up on the abandoned drug cartel car. Then driving out I passed by two heavily armed border patrol agents and told them what I saw. They seemed to not know the area and I wasn't going to take time to draw them a map.
So my understanding is the gaps in the wall are slated to be closed sometime starting in October in this area but no new wall will be built. Where it ends here is where it will stay until probably 2024.
Fun day, disappointed no rain today in the area but it's looking good at least at the border. |
