The stroll through the closed rec sites and launch area was a pleasant start to the hike. The dogs really enjoyed the large grassy areas surrounded by the forest of mesquite trees. The burrs were easy to navigate, as the road cuts a nice path through them. However, the dogs picked up a handful of them in their fur and paws each time through. We brought scissors in anticipation of this, so it was only a minor inconvenience for us. We were shocked to see an older style Subaru Forester high-sided with a blown out front left tire in the middle of the road on the approach. The fact that the car got that far down that road is simply astounding and I cannot fathom how anyone is every going to get that vehicle out of there. The volunteer at the pay station called it a google mapping fail and said the proper people were aware of it. I found the ruins intriguing and the setting pretty superb for the area. We took a nice break on the top and then headed back down. The exit off the mesa is a little tricky on the pups, use caution if you bring them. We hiked back to nice cloud cover and a cool breeze. |
