I found myself on this obscure trail in search of a ruin Larry had found on satellite imagery last spring. It turned out to be one of my more involved approaches for a ruin in a long time.

I approached the Hogan Springs Trail from Cave Creek Road and started off from a little campsite just past FR602. I then walked up Holmes Canyon. I alternated some sections of old road/trail, with walking down the middle of the drainage. I linked up with FR 602 just past Renner Spring and then took another well traveled ORV road to the "trailhead" for Hogan Springs, which has no standing signage, register, or informational kiosk. The trail still has good tread and is not overgrown in the beginning, but it eventually becomes engulfed in catclaw after the fence and gate. I walked the creek bed for most of my approach and only used the actual trail a few times.

The final approach to the ruins was a bit of a slog. I gained just under 1,000 feet in about three-quarters of a mile. For most of the approach and since it came in to sight, the prominent butte that held the ruins, looked almost inaccessible with steep cliffs guarding three sides of it. A small break on the backside and a little scramble eventually solved the ruin's defenses. The ruins were your run of the mill rock piles, but the views were exceptional and offered some pretty unique perspectives with the Four Peaks far off in the east and the Bradshaws and Perry Mesa to the west. I descended a different way back to the creek and then began the boulder hop back to single tread, the road and then the old road/wash back to the car. I was more efficient in my return and hit more trail in the benches along Hogan Springs and Holmes and the going seemed to go a little easier, despite my fatigued legs. An additional ruin find on the way back kept the spirits high and offset the tired legs some as well.

I feel like its been awhile since I thrashed through catclaw and chased some obscure rock piles, nice to know I still enjoy it.
