We had thought about the southern Mazzies, but with the recent snow, the possibility of the trails being hard to hike made us want to try something closer. The intent was to do the summit on Picketpost, but as we got to the more vertical sections, Jim was getting gassed and said he banged his knee on the way up . Wally and I weren't necessarily feeling it as we started scrambling in the cold, so we bailed and thought about just hiking the circumference.
Once we got down to the lower trail, I noticed an unmarked trail that headed to the west to the road that looks like an old alignment of the AZT on topo maps. We hiked that a ways until we got off onto another fainter road that climbed up the hills and was steeper than it looked. By the end, we did almost as much AEG as if we would have hiked to the summit and got almost as high as we did on the mountain. Along that road we saw an abandoned vehicle down in one of the canyons, wondered how it even got there.
Pretty cold to start in the dark, but it warmed up quickly once the sun hit. Saw hikers on the main trails but not on the side roads. Stopped for lunch at Los Hermanos afterwards, Jim's treat. |
