TH to Alamo No 2 Tank
The wind. Leaving the trailhead we followed the two-track which leads directly to Alamo No 2 Tank. It's a steady climb without too many dips where gained elevation is lost so not too bad. I had mapped out an alternate off-trail climb up to the tank using a wash but upon checking the entrance to the wash and seeing it choked up pretty early, we decided to stay on the two-track. Along the way we took a peek at a prospect area shown on the map but there wasn't much there. The tank was empty.
Off-trail across the ridgeline and down the wash
From the tank we climbed up to the ridgeline to the south of the tank and followed it across and down to a wide wash. Spooked up a deer upon reaching the top. Great views along the way across the ridge however due to the high grass and rocky terrain your eyes were forced downward but overall fairly easy off-trail hiking as we made our way down to the wash. Enjoyed a snack once in the wash and then followed the wash down and out to the AZT. The slate wash made for an easy walk. Some running water along the way.
AZT back to the TH
Nice easy stroll back to the TH and is the only section of the hike where we saw others, as expected. The wind had died down by this point so very enjoyable stretch of the loop.
Overall a very nice loop checking out a new area, avoiding the masses that gather in Arnett Canyon and/or PP summit. |
