| no partners | | | Took Tanque Verde road in Tucson which runs into Redington road. Continued up the mountain. From the Tanque Verde Falls lower parking lot, I continued about 6.6 miles to a junction and made a left on Bellota Ranch HQ road. I followed this road going North for roughly 3 miles and parked off the road. I believe it's possible to drive all the way to Chimney rock, but it would have been too easy. Even though I have a 4x4, I don't believe I needed to use 4 wheel drive at any point. But, I believe a high clearance vehicle is necessary to drive this far up the road. Along the drive, there were a few gates to go through, and one more going East after the junction. From here it's a little over 1 mile of dirt road to get to Chimney rock. When approaching, it looked steep and difficult, but after arriving I saw a safe way to get up the West side without using ropes. There was a fence but no signs saying keep out, etc. So, I scaled the fence walked around chimney rock and confirmed that the safest way was up the West side, then climbed it. It probably only took about 5 minutes to climb. At the top there were metal rings for climbers and I would assume they climbed up the East side which was much steeper and even concave in some areas. This climb is really only for people who are experienced at climbing. It can be dangerous if you don't have some good climbing skills. |
