| no partners | | Note: I did 3 summits as part of a loop. I will put all stats (distance, AEG, time) on this peak and leave the stats off my 2nd and 3rd peaks of the day which were (#2-Peak 7115, and #3-Cochise Peak).
I found out that getting to China peak involved only some old mining roads and no bushwhack, so it seemed like the obvious first choice for my first time in this mountain range. Today, I planned on only doing 2 summits, but because of the roads and my ability to make good time, I decided I had time for a 3rd summit.
The road was pretty well maintained and I could have driven much further up in my capable 4x4 but I decided to park down low and get more exercise climbing up. I parked at a nice campsite area near the junction of FS 697 and the main road. Then started walking up FS 697. At about the 2 mile mark, there was a real interesting gap in the rock which the road squeezes through. Then, shortly after that, there were a few campsites with some mature trees. This would be a great place to camp on another trip. The road got very steep near the top. Probably too steep even for most 4x4 vehicles, but walking it wasn't a problem. Near the summit, there was a fence line cutting the mountain in half and there was also a primitive gate that could be opened. At the summit, I found a large round tin which had a registry and some other items. It felt about 70 degrees at the summit at about 12:30 pm.
Total loop distance = 13.54 miles
AEG = 3,224 feet
I parked at the following location: 31.852462, -109.974445 |
