After hiking Peak 7115, and hiking back to the road. I realized that I had 2 choices. Go back up to China peak or follow FS 345 A down. I thought it would be more interesting to follow FS 345 A since it was uncharted territory for me. I followed this road down to the base of Cochise peak. By this time, it was already 4:50 pm, and I thought I had time to do this quick summit. I started climbing up the rocky wash and then after a few minutes, I realized the wash was too cluttered and that I would be better off just walking up the ridge. I continued up the ridge weaving through the pine and oak trees. I found a thick section of cat's claw bush that I went around. But, the thorns grew right up against a series of pines and it was tedious to squeeze through. I kept heading to the high point and got there in about 30 minutes. At the peak was a rock pile with a registry. I saw entries this year from Jan and April. More entries than Peak 7115 which was not surprising. I took a similar route down following the cattle trails. I ended up having to hike around the same terrible mass of cat's claw bush, having to step on some of the bush that was growing right into the pines. When I was back at FS 345 A, I saw that it was a good route and felt like I could take this road all the way down and it would run into FS 345, the main road. I was losing time and had to move fast. I made it to my truck just as it was getting dark. Great timing. It's not too often when I can summit 3 peaks in one day, especially when I started hiking as late as 10:15 am.
I parked at this location: 31.852462, -109.974445 which is the same location as for China peak. |
