After hiking to Butterfly peak, we hiked down the Butterfly trail to Novio springs and took a break there. There was a lot of shade and some running water. I hiked less than 1/4 mile up a "blocked trail" to see part of a plane wreck, which I've seen a few times previously. Jim and Preston went ahead on the Butterfly trail. I caught up to them but then they sped up getting to the saddle East of Mt Bigelow about 5 minutes before me. After summitting Mt Bigelow, we took the road West for a while and then jumped onto an unmarked social trail. That trail took us to an unmarked road with some nice campsites. There were some huge pines in this area. We kept walking and the unmarked trail took us to the West. We eventually crossed under Mt Lemmon Highway and the trail followed the highway for a while. Eventually, we ended up at the Eastern end of the Sunset trail. We crossed the road and went back to where we parked at the Butterfly trail. This unmarked social trail was very nice and I heard there are plans to make it a known trail. My Strava crapped out and didn't capture the entire route, but I'd like to hike this route again sometime. |
