Started at Dipsea Trailhead off Panoramic Highway. The small lot was nearly empty at a quarter to 8am. Dipsea was covered in fog on the way up, nothing to see really. Steep Ravine is the highlight of this hike, without a doubt. It's definitely steep, and extra humid first thing in the morning. I was drenched in sweat when I topped out near Pantoll Campground. With that said, fog + redwoods = great
From here to the peak was above the fog inversion, hence the dreamy views. Off in the distance, Sutro Tower in SF poked up through the clouds. It was bright and warm above the fog. Quite the contrast.
West Tamalpais is closed to the public and protected by a fence. Running just below it is Ridgecrest Boulevard. A fairly wide spur trail leads up from Ridgecrest, however, it becomes too difficult to pass through. You could probably crawl on your hands and knees to the highest point along the fence, but who has time for that? I pushed through a thinner section which emptied into a clearing near the fence - it was choked up in every direction after that. I sought out another route to no avail. I recall reading East Tamalpais is more scenic, so maybe next time.
A lot more people out on the return. Which reminds me, someone thought it was a good idea to spray paint arrows on this trail. On the bridge railings nonetheless. Kinda worrisome, if you can't find your way up this trail you should probably shouldn't leave the house. Venting aside, this is a great area and Steep Ravine should be on everyone's list. |
