| no partners | | This was a hike to Gilbert Peak (elevation of 13,442 feet and prominence of 1,554 feet), the highpoint of Summit County. I have now been to the highpoint of each of Utah's 29 counties.
I started and ended the hike at Henry's Fork Trailhead. The first 7.5 miles were on a good trail. Once I got to Dollar Lake I went off-trail around the lake, and then went up some steep slopes to a ridgeline. Once on the ridgeline the grade moderated a bit before going up steep talus slopes to the summit over the last mile or so.
Instead of hiking to the summit on the west spur via Dollar Lake, my original intention was to hike to the summit on the north ridge. Once I crossed Henry's Fork at Elkhorn Crossing, I made my way southeast on a trail that would take me to the north ridge. However this trail was overgrown and I had no beta on it, so I decided to cut my losses and I made my way back to Elkhorn Crossing and continued on to Dollar Lake. This detour added about 3/4 mile to the hike.
There is lots of water out there right now and the area is quite scenic. I was hoping to see a moose, but the only wildlife that I saw was some deer. On the way up I heard a coyote howling across a valley, but I did not see it.

I thought that this was a pretty tough day hike. In fact, it was almost as hard as hiking to King's Peak. |
