My plan was to hike Showshed peak which was a 12+ mile roundtrip hike but after hiking over 11 miles the day before, I was too tired and didn't want to spend the entire day hiking. Furthermore, I had a bad sunburn on my arms and hands (forgot the damn sunscreen), and had a skin abrasion on the back of my heel on boot that were already "broken in". Perhaps this was because I had not hiked anything long in a while and had not used the boots in a while. I noticed there were some hills in the Gleeson area East of Tombstone and it was on the way back from the Chiricahuas for me.
Driving directions: Drive to the center of Gleeson, AZ. Take Gleeson road SE to Ghost town trail and turn left. Continue 1.45 miles down a nicely graded dirt road. Turn left onto an unmarked road, drive about 200 feet and you will see a junction. I parked at this junction because the road was washed out up ahead to the right. This is a good place to start the hike. The forecast showed 78 to 80 degrees which wasn't too hot.
I started this hike around 9:40 am. On the way up, I followed the left junction of the road down and across a small wash. Then continued up the hill that was in front of the peak. I didn't have to summit this as there was a small drop West of this hill. The bushwhack was easy so far. After hiking a total of 1/3 mile I ran into an old mining road. I was able to follow this road for a short distance, then I realized it wasn't taking me to the peak so I kept walking UP. Along the way to the peak, I saw at least 5 or 6 old mining holes that were fenced off for safety. I took a few photos from the fence line. It was hard to tell how deep these holes were.
At the peak, I found a registry in a rock pile. The previous hikers were Sept 2022, over 1 year ago. There were turkey vultures circling around near the peak. They were probably shocked since I was the only visitor they saw in over a year.
On the way down, I followed basically the same route until I hit the old mining road. Then, I decided to follow the mining road down. The road curved to the North, then East, and I eventually ended up at the same place where I parked. I'm glad I didn't drive any further down this road because there was a lot of erosion and it wouldn't have been a pleasant drive. If you dislike bushwhack, you can take the road on the lower half and that will get you halfway up the mountain. But, overall, it was an easy bushwhack.
