I did this hike mainly to explore a new area that's not far from where I live. Originally I planned on driving closer to Thornydale Mountain but when I got close I was restricted by private property. I drove as close as I could and started the hike by walking North on the road I was on, and then getting off the road within a few minutes and bushwhacking in the direction of Thornydale Mountain. I stayed West of a small rocky hill that was to the North. Somewhere in this area was a low barbed wire fence that I needed to step over, I believe. There were no signs about private property anywhere here.

After bushwhacking about 0.7 miles North, I reached a wide sandy wash. From here, I traveled West, following the wash for about 200 feet, then I continued North out of the wash. After coming out of the wash, I could see Thornydale mountain and continued North.

A few minutes North of the wash, I found a coiled up rattlesnake right in the direction of where I was walking. It didn't move and it didn't rattle. I tossed a few small stones at it and the snake just twitched and did not rattle and did not move out of the way. So, I left it, and moved on. Perhaps it was dying or it may have been very weak.

From here my goal was to head up to the ridgeline from the Southeast side which looked like a good access point. Once on the ridge I stayed on the Western side and followed that to the top. There were a lot of obstacles like teddy bear cholla, prickly pear, thorn bushes, creosote, and steep rocks which I had to zig zag through. From the top there were nice views of the homes on either side, and also some nice views of the higher peaks in the Tortolita mountains. I went down the same way but followed a wash after dark to make better time. The wash turned into a road which was the same private road mentioned earlier. I didn't see any traffic on this road so I felt safe walking it. When I got to the main gate, I ducked under it and I was near the unmarked road which I had parked on. So, I continued to where I parked, completing the loop. Note: during this entire hike I did need to step over 2 barbed wire fences.

Good place to park: on unmarked road West of Sacred Canyon, these are the coordinates of where I parked: 32.443729, -111.049753
